{"id":86,"date":"2013-02-06T18:27:36","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T18:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pogo.lakesideschool.org\/library\/?p=86"},"modified":"2013-02-06T18:27:36","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T18:27:36","slug":"virtual-video-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/2013\/02\/06\/virtual-video-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Video Vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every January our team spends the month preparing for the department review.\u00a0\u00a0 This involves a combination of gathering usage statistics from our databases and catalog, surveying students, creating individual reflections and gathering readings that support our vision to share with the admin team.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal in gathering data is to notice patterns or trends.\u00a0\u00a0 As I looked at our database statistics, I was reminded of a dilemma that I have been shelving for a while now.\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the fact that virtually all of our database usage statistics have gone up, Safari Montage has gone down significantly over the past three years.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safarimontage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Safari Montage<\/a> is our streaming video database.\u00a0\u00a0 I was drawn to the company based on the quality of their content.\u00a0\u00a0 What other company has publishers like BBC, NASA, National Geographic and PBS?\u00a0 Unfortunately when it comes to playing the videos on individual laptops, we\u2019ve had inconsistent results.\u00a0\u00a0 There are a variety of reasons for this.\u00a0\u00a0 Lakeside\u2019s philosophy of not having a single, locked down image for student and faculty laptops is likely the top culprit.\u00a0\u00a0 Regardless of the reasons, if teachers can\u2019t rely on a product working on demand in their classroom, they won\u2019t use it.\u00a0\u00a0 If they can\u2019t ensure that students will be able to do their assignments in a flipped classroom model, they won\u2019t assign them.<\/p>\n<p>When trying to solve this problem, there are a number of key questions to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How will teachers who have invested a tremendous amount of time and effort into creating playlists for their classes feel about switching to another system?\u00a0\u00a0 How can we alleviate growing pains during the transition?<\/li>\n<li>Are we at the point that there are enough videos freely available online (YouTube, Vimeo, TED Talks) and through open courseware (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Khan Academy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coursera<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">EdX<\/a>) and that we no longer need to subscribe to a video database?<\/li>\n<li>Have any new products come on the scene in the last few years that rival Safari Montage\u2019s content?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After a bit of research, I stumbled on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoollibraryjournal.com\/slj\/articlesbooks\/884749-340\/digital_resources_streaming_video_at.html.csp\" target=\"_blank\">Facts On File Curriculum Video On Demand<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 I was thrilled to see that they offer engaging content from <a href=\"http:\/\/ffh.films.com\/\">Films Media Group<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We have a preview for the next month and I am looking forward to the comparison.\u00a0 Do any librarians out there have any feedback on this product?<\/p>\n<p>The question of video database platforms reminds me of why I love being a school librarian.\u00a0 The information landscape is constantly evolving and we truly need to be life-long learners in order to stay current.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pogo.lakesideschool.org\/library\/?p=83\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Hersey\u2019s last post<\/a> highlights why watching videos rather than simply reading can boost content retention.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is a good reminder of why we need to find a solution to our video database issues.\u00a0 What\u2019s best for students is at the core of our decision making process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every January our team spends the month preparing for the department review.\u00a0\u00a0 This involves a combination of gathering usage statistics from our databases and catalog, surveying students, creating individual reflections and gathering readings that support our vision to share with &hellip;
