{"id":68,"date":"2012-12-11T22:20:42","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T22:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pogo.lakesideschool.org\/library\/?p=68"},"modified":"2012-12-11T22:20:42","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T22:20:42","slug":"radical-revolution-maker-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/2012\/12\/11\/radical-revolution-maker-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Radical Revolution &#038; Maker Spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I stumbled on a group of students collaborating while sitting IN the study carrels.\u00a0\u00a0 Each of them, snuggled up knees to chest, was comfortably making our library their home.\u00a0 I walked up to the group of students and said, \u201cI\u2019m not exactly sure why, but I need you to sit in chairs.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Priding myself on reasonable self-awareness, I started to question the situation.\u00a0 Why do I need them to sit in chairs?\u00a0\u00a0 What purpose does it serve besides calming my neurotic need for the appearance of order?\u00a0 \u00a0Side note: I also feel best when all of the chairs are pushed in at the end of each class period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The following day, I watched Sir Ken Robinson\u2019s TED Talk, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/sir_ken_robinson_bring_on_the_revolution.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Bring on the Learning Revolution<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0In the talk SKR suggested that in order to have radical change, we need to disenthrall ourselves with current conventions in education.\u00a0\u00a0 Specifically he said,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThere are ideas that all of us are enthralled to, which we simply take for granted as the natural order of things, the way things are. And many of our ideas have been formed, not to meet the circumstances of this century, but to cope with the circumstances of previous centuries. But our minds are still hypnotized by them, and we have to disenthrall ourselves of some of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Disenthralling ourselves of current conventions is easier said than done.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Considering the idea, I started to make a list of conventions about our physical space that I seem to hold dear and ones that I have let go of in the last few years.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\" align=\"center\">\n<table width=\"640\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Concepts I\u2019m still attached to:<\/span><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Things I\u2019ve let go<\/span>:<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<ul>\n<li>Books on shelves organized by the Dewey decimal system<\/li>\n<li>Offering magazines and newspapers for leisure reading<\/li>\n<li>A reasonable decibel level<\/li>\n<li>No food policy<\/li>\n<li>Creating a variety of flexible spaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<ul>\n<li>The reference section<\/li>\n<li>Cell phone and gaming policies<\/li>\n<li>Quiet (except the silent reading room)<\/li>\n<li>No drinks allowed<\/li>\n<li>Microfilm\/fiche<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It is true that most of our work as librarians either takes place in classes, online or one-on-one with students and faculty. \u00a0\u00a0That being said, libraries (learning commons) are still essential gathering spots for students to congregate, collaborate and even play.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Library Journal\u2019s<\/em> recent series, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedigitalshift.com\/2012\/10\/public-services\/the-makings-of-maker-spaces-part-1-space-for-creation-not-just-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Makings of Maker Spaces<\/em><\/a>, has me thinking about our physical library and ways that we could continue to evolve to meet the needs of our students and faculty.\u00a0\u00a0 I haven\u2019t come to any definitive conclusions about what exactly needs to change, but I know that revolutionary thinking should involve the following considerations:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li>\u00a0Learning is driven by demand for knowledge rather than supply.<\/li>\n<li>We are moving from a culture of consumption to one of creation.<\/li>\n<li>Students are most engaged in learning when it looks and feels like play.<\/li>\n<li>Our students need to take a multidisciplinary approach to learning.<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration is an essential 21<sup>st<\/sup> century skill.<\/li>\n<li>One of our students\u2019 best resources on campus is each other.<\/li>\n<li>Students will continue to take more classes exclusively online.<\/li>\n<li>Our virtual resources are more important that our print ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Perhaps we should put the question to our students.\u00a0\u00a0 How would they design the library of the future?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I stumbled on a group of students collaborating while sitting IN the study carrels.\u00a0\u00a0 Each of them, snuggled up knees to chest, was comfortably making our library their home.\u00a0 I walked up to the group of students and said, &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/2012\/12\/11\/radical-revolution-maker-spaces\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-68","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-libpost"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/68","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=68"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/68\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=68"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=68"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=68"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
