{"id":61,"date":"2012-11-08T21:11:32","date_gmt":"2012-11-08T21:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pogo.lakesideschool.org\/library\/?p=61"},"modified":"2012-11-08T21:11:32","modified_gmt":"2012-11-08T21:11:32","slug":"61","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/2012\/11\/08\/61\/","title":{"rendered":"Copyrights and Copywrongs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I saw Cory Doctorow speak at Elliot Bay Books in Seattle.\u00a0 (A <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Tp0_rGvDZAo\" target=\"_blank\">similar reading<\/a> was filmed at Word in Brooklyn.)\u00a0 He was promoting his new novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/craphound.com\/pc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pirate Cinema<\/a>, which starts with a boy who loses Internet access for his entire family because he is making mash-ups of copyrighted movies.\u00a0 If this sounds like an incredible piece of fiction, think again.\u00a0 Doctorow discussed the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_Economy_Act_2010\" target=\"_blank\">The Digital Economy Act<\/a> in England and how his novel represents a scenario that could easily become reality.<\/p>\n<p>But we\u2019re fine in the USA, right? \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act\" target=\"_blank\">Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)<\/a> was defeated after all!\u00a0 Not so fast\u2026Doctorow warns us not to be complacent.\u00a0 Firstly, SOPA was postponed not completely defeated, and there has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ala_sopa_pipa_open1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">other legislation<\/a> introduced similar to it.\u00a0 Secondly, Doctorow brought to my attention a new initiative from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyrightinformation.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\">The Center for Copyright Information<\/a>, \u201ca collaborative effort between U.S. content creators in the movie and music industries and leading\u201d Internet Service Providers.\u00a0 Getting surprisingly little attention given the uproar over SOPA, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyrightinformation.org\/alerts\" target=\"_blank\">Copyright Alert System<\/a> (CAS) is<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cpart of a progressive educational system to help subscribers understand the significance of protecting copyright in the digital environment, to advise them about the importance of avoiding inadvertent or intentional online distribution of copyrighted content, and to suggest legal ways to obtain digital content.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is just one of many alert systems being instituted around the globe.\u00a0 Wikipedia provides an overview of these various \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graduated_response\" target=\"_blank\">graduated response<\/a>\u201d systems.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyrightinformation.org\/alerts\" target=\"_blank\">US system<\/a> \u201capplies to peer-to-peer file sharing of digital copyrighted content.\u00a0 It does not address other possible forms of online copyright infringement involving the downloading or streaming of copyrighted content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In our the meme-saturated, mash-up world, young people need to be aware of these issues not only so they can protect themselves but also so they can protect their rights.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/craphound.com\/pc\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\">As Cory Doctorow explains on his website<\/a> while discussing why he recently altered his <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Commons license<\/a> to include \u201cNoDerivs:\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cCopyright gives you, the public, rights. Fair use is real. Fair dealing is real. De minimum exemptions to copyright are real. You have the right to make all sorts of uses of all copyrighted works, without permission, without Creative Commons licenses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rights are like muscles. When you don&#8217;t exercise them, they get flabby. Stop asking for stuff you can take without permission.
