{"id":23,"date":"2012-09-27T15:54:14","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T15:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pogo.lakesideschool.org\/library\/?p=23"},"modified":"2012-09-27T15:54:14","modified_gmt":"2012-09-27T15:54:14","slug":"academic-sources-for-everyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pogolives.com\/library\/2012\/09\/27\/academic-sources-for-everyone\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Sources for Everyone!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love databases like JSTOR and Academic Search Premier; however, they are quite expensive.\u00a0 With a growing number of online courses like those provided by the <a title=\"Global Online Academy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalonlineacademy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Online Academy<\/a>, which hosts students from a variety of schools with varying levels of access, finding free scholarly sources is more important than ever.\u00a0 This month, Joyce Valenza wrote about this issue on her blog, <a title=\"NeverEndingSearch\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.schoollibraryjournal.com\/neverendingsearch\"><em>NeverEndingSearch<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 In a post titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schoollibraryjournal.com\/neverendingsearch\/2012\/09\/10\/new-tricks-for-academics\/\" target=\"_blank\">New tricks for academics<\/a>,\u201d she discusses changes to <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Scholar<\/a>, a rediscovery of <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.research.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft\u2019s Academic Search<\/a>, and the connective power of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mendeley<\/a>.\u00a0 Today, a new academic source appeared in my inbox.\u00a0 According to the email,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/academicroom.org\/marketing\/link.php?M=1309087&amp;N=43&amp;L=18&amp;F=H\"><em>Academic Room<\/em><\/a><em> is an online platform that was conceived at Harvard as an independent initiative to facilitate multidisciplinary engagements among scholars and researchers around the world. Our <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/academicroom.org\/marketing\/link.php?M=1309087&amp;N=43&amp;L=18&amp;F=H\"><em>mission<\/em><\/a><em> is to democratize access to scholarly resources, which are organized in over 10,000 academic sub-disciplines. We share the conviction that easy and unimpeded access to quality educational resources should be a right and not a privilege. Our platform allows academics, researchers and students to create highly specialized portals for their subfields. These portals can be enriched with professional directories, scholar profiles, video lectures, bibliographies, journal articles, books, reviews, images, ancient manuscripts and audio recordings. \u00a0Scholars can now promote their work to a much larger audience than allowed by traditional channels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even without registering, a user has access to a variety of multimedia.\u00a0 A quick look at the \u201cHistory of North America\u201d page reveals full text articles such as \u201cPsychological Warfare in Vietnam\u201d by James O.
